The City is working diligently to achieve a waste diversion rate of 65 per cent by 2012 -- a target established by the Region of Niagara, which oversees recycling and waste collection in St. Catharines and Niagara's 11 other lower-tier municipalities.

People in public spaces, such as streets, parks, baseball diamonds and sports arenas generate a significant amount of waste.
The City of St. Catharines is currently involved in public space recycling pilot program to reduce the amount of garbage bound for landfill and help reach that 65 per cent waste diversion target.
Recycling bins are now located throughout the downtown to help achieve that goal, including receptacles outside City Hall and Market Square.
