Mayor's Committee on Community & Race Relations

Purpose

The purpose of the Mayor's Committee on Community and Race Relations (MCCRR) is to promote tolerance, acceptance and equal opportunities in the City of St. Catharines.

Vision

The MCCRR and through it, St. Catharines City Council, is committed to the principle that all persons are equal and have the right to live, work and visit in an environment that respects diversity and is free of discrimination and harassment. 

The Committee's vision includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • All Ethno-Racial and culturally diverse populations
  • Religious beliefs and practices
  • Canada's First Nations Peoples
  • Sexual orientation
  • Seniors, youth and children
  • Individuals who have mental and physical disabilities
  • The Committee represents every individual citizen as a valued member of the St. Catharines community

Goals

  • To promote non-discriminatory policies and practices within the City of St. Catharines, its boards, commissions and other institutions
  • To monitor and respond to issues and concerns where discrimination of any citizen or group of citizens has been identified
  • To encourage participation of all citizens and groups in the City of St. Catharines government structure, processes and programs
  • To work cooperatively with community organizations, businesses and governmental bodies to further the work of the Committee
  • To conduct necessary research in order to support the goals and direction of the Committee

Membership

Membership is open to citizens who reside and/or are property owners in the City of St. Catharines and who are 18 years of age or older.

Voting Membership

The committee consists of 12 voting members.  Voting membership shall consist of the Mayor and 11 citizen representatives who have been appointed through the City's citizen appointment process.

Membership Responsibility

  • Members shall observe all corporate policies of the City of St. Catharines with respect to the conduct, harassment and discrimination.
  • Members shall work together in order to develop a common approach that is reasonable and practical
  • A committee member shall make every effort to attend all meetings

Each member of the Committee is recognized as an independent representative to the committee who does not represent the concerns of only one group or special interest.

The appointment of a citizen member to a committee shall be rescinded should the member be absent from three consecutive meetings or absent from over 50% of the meetings in one year, unless excused by the committee due to extenuating circumstances.

Membership Term

The term of appointment for Committee membership shall be a four-year term concurrent with the term of Council. However, due to occasional vacancies occurring within the term of appointment, membership applications are accepted on an on-going basis and referred to for interim appointment should a vacancy occur prior to the term expiring.

Meeting Schedule & Location(s)

Meetings are held at 4:30 p.m.on the third Tuesday of every month, excluding July and August.
